Alps Ski Summary History

Last updated: Sun 21st Dec, 2014 at 15:55

Lots of sunshine and too little snow will be the main theme in the Alps this Christmas and skiing right now is mostly limited to just the upper slopes of the leading alpine resorts. The lack of snowfall in December means many resorts are really struggling to offer enough pistes for the numbers of skiers in the resorts for the festive season. (Hopes now pinned on the 7-day forecast which suggests colder and more wintry weather next weekend)

Last updated: Sat 20th Dec, 2014 at 16:41

Almost all the leading alpine resorts are now open for the Christmas holiday period but there is a shortage of snow in many areas. Most lower slopes lack snow cover and so skiing is being offering on pistes above mid-station elevation where snow conditions are good enough to open most pistes. Skiers should expect more sunshine than snowfall in the Alps for the holiday period and temperatures look set to remain relatively mild for the time of year.

Last updated: Fri 19th Dec, 2014 at 11:33

After recent snowfall the Alps are now seeing mostly sunny skies and milder temperatures. This is not what many ski resorts were hoping for as lower slopes in most of the leading alpine resorts still lack sufficient snow depth to open pistes. However on higher pistes and glacier slopes the snow cover is adequate and skiers will find some good skiing conditions. The forecast suggests more sunshine and very snowfall for the Alps through Christmas week.

Snow has been falling right across the Alps and ski conditions have been improving in all the leading alpine resorts. On lower slopes though the snow depths are still thin and this means skiing is confined to the higher elevations where pistes have snow cover that is deeper and drier. This weekend almost all resort will be open as skiers arrive for Christmas week in the Alps.

Fresh snowfall is continuing to improve conditions right across the Alps and many more resorts will open for the Christmas period this weekend. Across Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland lower slopes still lack snow depths, and most pistes remains closed, the upper slopes however are now offering some good skiing conditions and quite reasonable snow depths.

Last updated: Tue 16th Dec, 2014 at 13:36

Fresh snow in the Alps now and on the highest pistes of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland there is some good skiing available. However on the lower slopes, and in low elevation resorts, there remains a need for heavy snowfall to kick start the season as the lack of significant snow cover is now holding back opening dates in many areas.

Last updated: Mon 15th Dec, 2014 at 14:31

Light snowfall is moving over the Alps this week but there still remains a lack of snow cover on the lower slopes of most ski resorts across Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. Also, during the day the freezing level is typically above resort level and this is not helping snow making operations. Skiers are therefore confined to just the highest pistes where the snow is fresh and dry and good to ski.

Last updated: Sun 14th Dec, 2014 at 13:42

There remains a need for significant snowfall right across the Alps with the resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland all struggling to open pistes. There is still good skiing on offer but it is only on the very highest Alpine pistes. Skiing at these high elevations is good on fresh dry snow. Skiers await a more favourable forecast.

Last updated: Fri 12th Dec, 2014 at 14:10

More resorts are opening this weekend in the Alps but there remains a lack of significant fresh snowfall. Skiing is therefore still limited to the highest pistes of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. On these high slopes the snow conditions are mostly good and with settled weather expected there will be good sport on offer this weekend.

Last updated: Thu 11th Dec, 2014 at 11:35

Good skiing continues to be offered on the highest pistes of the Alps but only in the highest ski resorts. Lower slopes and lower resorts are still struggling to accumulate enough snow to open. The forecast is not offering much help as mostly dry conditions are expected for through the weekend. Alpine resorts will continue to operate snow cannon and hope significant natural snowfall will soon arrive.

Last updated: Wed 10th Dec, 2014 at 14:31

Slowly snow cover is increasing in the Alps and the ski resorts are working hard to also produce snow for lower level pistes. Skiing this week though is being offered only on the highest pistes of the high alpine resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. Conditions here are very good with ample snow depths and typically a fresh dry snow cover that is great to ski.

Last updated: Tue 09th Dec, 2014 at 13:49

The Alps holds less snow than many resorts would like currently but the good news is that by combining continuing light snowfall, low temperatures and artificial snow-making the situation is steadily improving. In the meantime good skiing continues to be offered on the high pistes of the highest resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland.

Last updated: Sun 07th Dec, 2014 at 15:40

The Alps have a light cover of fresh snow and with the freezing level now below the ski resorts, all pistes are being prepared for opening in the near future. Already there is good skiing on offer in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland but so far only on the highest pistes and glacier slopes.

Last updated: Fri 05th Dec, 2014 at 14:31

Finally conditions are turning colder in the Alps and light snowfall is expected across Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland this weekend. Skiing is already on offer but only in the highest alpine resorts as recent weather has been too mild for snowfall on lower slopes. On the very highest pistes though, ski conditions now are good.

Last updated: Thu 04th Dec, 2014 at 11:48

Cooler air is arriving in the Alps and there will be some light snowfall in many resorts this weekend. Already there is good high altitude skiing on offer in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland but lower pistes need snow. The best skiing currently on offer is on the Italian side of the Alps as this is where the bulk of the early season snowfall has accumulated.

Last updated: Wed 03rd Dec, 2014 at 12:15

Light snowfall and colder temperatures are now forecast for the Alps which is good news for skiers as it means resorts will commence snow making operations to prepare pistes for opening. Already the highest pistes of the highest resorts in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland are offering good skiing conditions with fresh dry snow reported.

Last updated: Tue 02nd Dec, 2014 at 13:29

Italy is now offering some very good high altitude skiing as there as been significant fresh snowfall on the glaciers on the southern side of the Alps in recent days. Austria, France and Switzerland also have some skiing on offer in their highest resorts but they are hoping colder air forecast for later this week will also deliver enough fresh snow to open more pistes.

Last updated: Mon 01st Dec, 2014 at 13:04

Unsettled weather conditions in the Alps currently with the freezing level still above resort level. There has been fresh snow though on the highest pistes and that is where early season skiing is on offer with Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland all now offering uplift with skiing mostly on glacier slopes.

Last updated: Fri 28th Nov, 2014 at 12:09

There is skiing on offer in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland this weekend but it is limited to only the highest pistes of the highest alpine resorts. Temperatures across the Alps are still relatively mild and this has often meant rain rather than snowfall in recent days. Colder air is however expected to arrive through next week and this should allow resorts to commence snow making operations at lower elevations.

Last updated: Thu 27th Nov, 2014 at 16:37

There is some good skiing in the Alps currently but only on the very highest pistes of the highest resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. The freezing level is still too high to allow snow-making operations to commence on lower slopes and colder air, along with fresh snowfall, is not expected to arrive until the middle of next week.

Last updated: Wed 26th Nov, 2014 at 15:39

The western Alps have had recent fresh snowfall but only on the very highest pistes and right across the Alps the freezing level remains well above resort level. This means that currently the skiing on offer is limited to just the glacier slopes and top pistes of the highest alpine resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland.

Last updated: Tue 25th Nov, 2014 at 13:50

The freezing level remains higher than skiers would want in the Alps with very little snow cover on lower slopes. However there is good high altitude skiing on offer in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland and the snow depths at glacier elevation are impressive. Further fresh snow is expected on these slopes through the week but colder weather will be required before lower pistes open for the season.

Last updated: Mon 24th Nov, 2014 at 13:04

Relatively mild air is moving over the Alps currently and removing the limited snow cover on the lower elevation ski slopes - but on the highest pistes, where ski lifts are now operating for the new season, there is good skiing on offer. Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland all have ski resorts open but those resorts are only offering uplift for skiing on their upper slopes or glacier pistes.

Last updated: Sun 23rd Nov, 2014 at 15:24

Early season skiing continues in the Alps but still only on the highest pistes of the highest resorts. Snow cover on these slopes is excellent and there is good sport on offer. Lower slopes still need substantial snowfall but that won

Last updated: Sat 22nd Nov, 2014 at 14:41

Wonderful conditions for skiers currently in the Alps with settled overhead conditions. Across Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland there are resorts open and offering very good snow conditions on their high elevation pistes. More snow will be required to open lower slopes to skiers but mostly sunny skies are expected for the next few days.

Last updated: Fri 21st Nov, 2014 at 14:30

More resorts open in the Alps this weekend and there will be good skiing on offer with excellent snow depths and conditions on the high elevation pistes which have now been opened for early season skiers. The alpine weather remains mostly calm and there will be plenty of sunshine through the weekend for skiers across Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland.

Last updated: Thu 20th Nov, 2014 at 16:51

The fine weather continues in the Alps and early season skiers are enjoying excellent conditions on the very high elevation pistes that are already open for the season. This weekend more resorts open in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland and pistes are now being prepared in these resorts with snow cannon boosting snow depths.

Last updated: Wed 19th Nov, 2014 at 14:46

The Alps are now experiencing a settled and sunny period of weather but in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland there is already ample snow cover on the highest pistes which are now open for the new season. Skiing is mostly on glacier slopes where the snow remains fresh and dry. More resorts are expected to open this weekend.

Last updated: Tue 18th Nov, 2014 at 17:12

Fresh snow has been falling over the Austrian Alps and now all the high elevation ski areas that are now open across Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland have good snow depths and good snow quality. The next few days will be calm and sunny so excellent conditions for early season skiers in the Alps.

Last updated: Sun 16th Nov, 2014 at 14:28

Early season skiing is underway on the highest slopes of the Alps now with Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland all offering ski uplift for glacier pistes. At this elevation there is now excellent skiing on offer thanks to recent heavy snowfall with skiers often enjoying powder snow conditions.
