Alps Ski Summary History

Last updated: Thu 28th Apr, 2016 at 12:59

The ski season continues in the Alps into May but only on the very highest glacier pistes above a handful of resorts. This weekend will see unusually heavy snowfall and relatively low temperatures in these resorts and this means that once the weather settles and the sunshine returns there will be superb ski conditions on offer.

There is superb end of season skiing on offer on the glacier pistes of the highest resorts of the Alps. Snow conditions are fresh and dry and when the sun is shining the skiing could not be much better, especially given that it is almost May. The forecast indicates periods of heavy snow high in the Alps this weekend, for most resorts the final weekend of the season, so it looks like we will close out this season in style.

There are wonderful end of season skiing conditions on offer on the highest glacier slopes of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. This week skiers are enjoying fresh snow conditions on piste with periods of sunshine and snow showers overhead. The freezing level is unusually low for this late in the season and generally rising just below 2000m through the day, which is below the elevation of the ski slopes that remain open.

There are fresh powder snow conditions on the highest glacier pistes of the Alps and still uplift is on offer for skiers in Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. Skiing continues in the Alps but now only on the very high pistes of the highest alpine resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. On these slopes skiers will find fresh dry snow conditions and this week when the sun shines the skiing will be superb for this late stage of the season. The forecast promises a mix of further snow showers and sunny spells plus temperatures well below the seasonal norm.

Last updated: Sat 23rd Apr, 2016 at 16:00

The weather has turned cold in the Alps and fresh snow is now falling over many of the very high elevation pistes that remain open in the very highest resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. The next few days will be cool and further snow showers are possible but when sunny periods develop the skiing on offer will be excellent for this very late stage of the season.

Last updated: Fri 22nd Apr, 2016 at 16:07

Cloudy overhead weather conditions in the Alps now and this is limiting skiers enjoyment of the still good snow cover on the high pistes of the highest elevation resorts that continue to offer skiing this late in the season. This weekend fresh snow is forecast for the highest elevation pistes so once the weather settles there is potential for an excellent end to the season.

The highest pistes of the Alps have fresh snow and now that periods of sunshine are developing the skiing in the high altitude winter resorts that remain open through April is excellent. The next few days will be mild and sunny so expect classic spring snow conditions to develop at all elevations.

Last updated: Mon 18th Apr, 2016 at 16:00

The highest pistes of the Alps have fresh snow cover and so the high resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland, where late season skiing continues through April, will be offering excellent skiing just as soon as the sunshine returns. And the alpine forecast indicates that is likely to happen over the next few days so skiers can expect perfect spring ski conditions.

Last updated: Sun 17th Apr, 2016 at 15:47

The highest alpine resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland continue to offer uplift for skiers and when the sun shines there is excellent skiing on offer. Snow conditions are highly variable as showers of rain, sleet and snow continue to sweep over the Alps so skiers typically find the best sport is on pistes at glacier elevation.

Spring skiing continues on the high pistes of the highest alpine resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. Overhead the weather conditions are mixed currently and more sunshine would be welcome - but the forecast for the next few days indicates cloudy skies with even fresh snow possible on glacier pistes.

Last updated: Fri 15th Apr, 2016 at 10:03

Still rather variable overhead conditions in the Alps but when the sun shines the skiing is good on the highest pistes of the highest alpine resorts that continue to offer skiing this late in the season. The forecast suggests some fresh snowfall through the weekend for these high slopes so more good skiing in prospect.

Last updated: Thu 14th Apr, 2016 at 14:40

Overhead conditions continue to be mixed in the Alps and the forecast indicates more of the same to come through the weekend. Skiing is now taking place on just the highest pistes of the high alpine resorts and here the snow depths remain good with skiers typically finding variable spring snow conditions. Next week however fresh snowfall is possible on these same high pistes.

Last updated: Wed 13th Apr, 2016 at 10:54

Skiers can still enjoy some excellent spring snow conditions in the highest resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland with the best skiing now to be found on glacier pistes. Overhead conditions this week are mixed with April showers, falling as snow only on the summits, combining with periods of warm spring sunshine.

Last updated: Tue 12th Apr, 2016 at 11:57

There is good skiing still on offer across the Alps but now only in the very highest resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland. April showers are in the forecast and slightly cooler air for the next couple of days means some fresh snow is possible on glacier pistes, otherwise expect classic spring sunshine skiing.

Last updated: Mon 11th Apr, 2016 at 15:08

The forecast for the Alps indicates plenty of sunny spells but also showers over the next few days. With mild air temperatures there are now classic spring skiing conditions on offer in the high level alpine resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland that continue to offer ski uplift through April. The best skiing is through the morning on the highest pistes available.

Last updated: Sun 10th Apr, 2016 at 15:54

Last updated: Thu 07th Apr, 2016 at 13:13

Overhead conditions continue to be mixed in the Alps but cooler air and high level snowfall is possible before warmer weather and clearer skies arrive through the weekend. The best skiing and snow conditions are now found on the highest pistes of high elevation resorts and lower alpine resorts are now closed for the season.

Last updated: Wed 06th Apr, 2016 at 13:42

April showers are moving over the Alps with rain or sleet rather than snow affecting most slopes. The best skiing now is on the very highest pistes of the highest resorts as recent weather has been mild and with the forecast indicating that the freezing level will mostly remain closer to the summits than resort elevation, skiers heading to the Alps now are best advised to choose resorts with glacier skiing.

Last updated: Tue 05th Apr, 2016 at 13:20

Overhead conditions are rather mixed in the Alps but the freezing level is mostly remaining close to summit elevation through the day in all the leading ski resorts. This means that snow on lower slopes is thawing fast and skiers are heading to the highest alpine slopes to find good sport. Resorts with glacier pistes will offer the best skiing and the most terrain through this month.

Last updated: Mon 04th Apr, 2016 at 14:45

The high pistes of the Alps continue to offer good skiing and snow conditions but temperatures are mild and snow conditions at the lower elevations are now heavy and wet. All the leading resorts are open with the best of the sunshine in the eastern Alps, whilst in the west skies are more cloudy with rain or wet snowfall possible at times.

Last updated: Sun 03rd Apr, 2016 at 15:42

The leading resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland are still offering good skiing on upper pistes where snow cover remains decent and all runs are complete. Lower slopes across the Alps are now losing snow fast but most resort access runs are complete. The freezing level will rise to almost summit level for the next few days so the best skiing will be early in the day and on the highest slopes.

Last updated: Sat 02nd Apr, 2016 at 15:24

The western Alps have rather mixed overhead conditions whilst in the east it is mostly sunny. All the leading resorts of Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland have wet snow conditions on lower slopes and skiers are preferring to head to high pistes where the snow is firm and the snow depths still impressive. When the sun is out skiers can expect classic spring ski conditions.

Last updated: Fri 01st Apr, 2016 at 15:05

Last updated: Thu 31st Mar, 2016 at 15:18
